Since I decided to use a different translation in the written form of the my last blog I wanted to go ahead and show the complete version of that translation. It is actually better done than the recorded version.
Astrology and the Like.—It is presumable that the objects of the religious, moral, aesthetic and logical notions pertain simply to the superficialities of things, although man flatters himself with the thought that here at least he is getting to the heart of the cosmos. He deceives himself because these things have power to make him so happy and so wretched, and so he evinces, in this respect, the same conceit that characterises astrology. Astrology presupposes that the heavenly bodies are regulated in their movements in harmony with the destiny of mortals: the moral man presupposes that that which concerns himself most nearly must also be the heart and soul of things.
Choosing the best translation is difficult at best when it comes to Nietzsche, in german he’s considered one of the masters. His complete understanding of his native tongue, inside and out, allowed him to imply and sometimes explain simply by the word choice and placement. Bringing that into a different language is.. well impossible. All that can be done is approximate. I try to use the translation that best captures the underlying feeling, but sometimes the best feeling comes from portions of multiple translations. basically I’m doing my best to bring as many nuances as possible to light but ultimately it’s best to search this out on your own. I highly suggest all of Nietzsche’s writing and hopefully as i expand outward I may be able to help you find other writers and thinkers also worth exploring. I also am always looking for input, regardless of what it is. I don’t believe the world is binary or necessarily black and white. Any source that can contribute some form of knowledge is always welcome.
